It has on-going projects in several states of India on the thematic areas of health, livelihoods and democratic governance. Job Summary

This is a unique opportunity for an individual who has a background in training and OD and a desire to be part of the development sector. This role is a blend of strategy & grassroots implementation focused in the areas where our projects are ongoing. Avantha Foundation works on a wide range of issues and is looking for a person who has the ability to work across themes and sectors, and engage and develop diverse stakeholders. The successful candidate will partner with the CEO and work collaboratively with program managers to ensure implementation of the OD strategy in respective projects. Travel to remote project locations within India is expected.

The specific role of the position will be:

  •  Draw out the strategy document for the training and implantation plan for training rollout for relevant stakeholders for both Nutrition and Governance projects
  • Conduct an in-depth training needs assessment and develop the training plan
  • Develop training modules for stakeholders
  • Develop train the trainer modules and create master trainers
  • Develop mechanisms for reinforcement, ensuring that knowledge translates into the job being done
  • Conduct the trainings if and as required
  • Monitor and analyze outcomes

Candidate Profile

  •  Strong background in organisational development and capacity building in diverse environment
  • Ability to be hands-on as well as strategic
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to conduct trainings in Hindi and English
  • Deep interest and understanding of development issues critical to India
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to build capacities of stakeholders

Qualifications

  • A post-graduate qualification with at least 5-8 years of experience and a track record in HR & OD
  • Experience in a non-profit organisation will be a definite asset

Avantha Foundation is a Pune based not-for-profit with a national footprint that came into existence in 2010 with the objective of improving the quality of life of communities across the country by addressing issues of national concern through pioneering development initiatives. The foundation seeks to bring about systemic changes within identified issues by supporting long term strategic interventions and by encouraging multi-sectoral partnerships. It partners with a broad range of stakeholders including government and non-government organisations as well as multilateral agencies to implement programs and create outcomes that lead to policy changes in favour of communities in need.

One of the flagship programs of the foundation is Avantha Urban Innovation Program. Its focuses on governance reforms in small and medium Indian towns through research-based and participatory action projects for improved public service delivery, fiscal governance and enhanced citizen participation. The short-term focus of the Avantha Urban Innovation Program (AUIP) is to build capacities for delivery of quality public services. The vision however is to economically empower Urban Local Governments (ULGs), harness their unique strengths to build a brand identity for themselves capable of independently attracting investments for inclusive and sustainable growth

This is achieved through the Avantha Governance Fellowship Program. A two-year fellowship program for young professionals to engage in live urban governance reform projects. Fellows are placed with Urban Local Governments, contributing through research-based and participatory action projects aimed at improved public service delivery, fiscal governance and enhanced citizen participation. Projects such a process mapping of municipal services, mapping of municipal infrastructure, urban governance index, GIS of cities, capacity building through training workshops, budget analysis and developing medium term fiscal frameworks are undertaken during the course of the fellowship.

Eligibility criteria to apply for the fellowship:

  • Masters degree in any Social science & humanities or allied fields (Economics, Public Policy, Development Studies, Social Work, Urban Planning)
  • Candidates with degrees in other fields and looking for a development career are also encouraged to apply
  • Willing to live and work in small towns (these are generally small towns with a population of less than 100,000 people) where the Avantha Urban Innovation Program is being implemented
  • Fluency in English and Hindi
  • Basic computer skills and comfort with data processing tools
  • Ability to think and work independently
  • Good research and analytical skills
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills
  • Preferably below 30 years of age.

1. Ideal candidate for the fellowship shall have knowledge and understanding of governance mechanisms in the country. Please describe your knowledge on federal structure of the country and the role of urban local bodies.
2. One of the key tasks during the fellowship is communicating with Government officials and elected representatives. It is crucial to articulate your needs and ensure support from all stakeholders. Describe your experience where you utilised your communication skills for achieving results.
3. The fellowship entails extensive field work for collecting data sets from government agencies and communities. Describe your knowledge and/or experience of designing questionnaires and conducting primary surveys.

5. Governance programs have long gestation period; it is of utmost importance that fellows look at the bigger picture rather than instant gratification. Seeing the big picture is about having an in-depth understanding and knowledge of how your role fits with and supports organisational objectives and the wider public needs and the national interest.
